Philly cheese steak wrapped in a flaky crust and bake to perfection! this is the perfect weeknight family dinner.
Strombolis are an all time classic comfort food. We usually prefer a strombolis over pizza when we are really hungry and want something that will satisfy the hunger. Strombolis get the job done right!
They are packed with meat, cheese and sometimes marinara sauce, depending on what type of stromboli you are making. I HAD to make a Philly cheese steak Stromboli because we live in Philly now and it would be a shame not to!
This stromboli is the the perfect combo of pizza and cheese steak. It’s packed with thinly sliced steak, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, an cheese of course. You can use your own homemade pizza dough, supermarket dough, or the canned dough.
It fills you up! if it were up to me I would eat this everyday but I’m holding back.
Philly Cheese Steak Stromboli
Ingredients
- Pre-made Pizza Dough, one pizza dough makes 2 Strombolis
- 1 lb roast or sandwich steak, sliced thin
- 1 medium onion, sliced thin
- 1/2 green bell pepper, sliced thin
- 2 jalapenos seeded, washed, and sliced (optional, spicy)
- 8 oz mozzarella cheese, shredded or sliced
- 6 slices provolone cheese, optional
- 1 small jar sliced mushrooms
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- Salt and Pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Heat a large pan to medium/high heat. Add 1 Tbsp oil, place steaks in pan and Sprinkle steak with salt and pepper. Cook for 2-3 minutes then add the sliced onions, bell pepper, and mushrooms and saute for 2-3 minutes or until the onions are lightly browned. Don't overcook the meat and veggies because they will still cook in the oven.
- With a rolling pin, roll the dough of one loaf into an approximate 9 X 13 inch rectangle. Pour the steak mixture in the center make sure you leave about 1/2 inch of the dough edges plain so the dough will stick when you roll it). Layer the cheese on the steak mixture then Fold in the sides and tuck and roll the loaf.
- Place the loaf, seam side down on a greased baking sheet or aluminum foil. Beat one egg and brush the outside of the loaves until completely covered with the egg, cut thin 2 inch strips on the top layer of the dough. Bake for 15 - 20 minutes until golden brown. Cut and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce. I like to use ranch or marinara.

I haven’t tried this but the picture looks bussin. And also we are about to make the food that you created.
This is absolutely delicious! Thank you, so much. Family loved it!
What kind of meat! I have shoulder roasts in my freezer! Can I use them? If so how to prepare?
Ribeye works best for cheesesteak because it’s a tender cut but you can also use the shoulder you have. Just be sure to slice it super thin.
Wonderful good ๐๐ผโฅ๏ธ!
I purchased yoyr steak and cheese stromboli and all i tasted wS ghe black pepper that you use for seasoning not the onion or garlic powder its too much black pepper you couldnt even taste the steak i was very dissapointed in this product and especially the price i paid for ir i would of been better off going to Subway
Yes i purchased you steak and cheese stromboli and all i kept tasting is black pepper could not enjoy it did not taste garlic or onion powder but the black pepper was so overwhelming that i couldnt taste the meat.it was RECCOMENDed by my uncle cuz he knows i love a good philly steak sub, sandwhich or stromboli and for what i was charged i was very disappointed
Gina, the black pepper is to taste and if it was overpowering then it is because you used too much! :/
What is the recipe or brand and Product you used to create the dough? I see you have the carbs only listed as 5! I plan to makE it after finding out.
“Cook for minutes then add the slices onions”
Care to fix this typo? I’ve had this recipe pinned for a while and am just now noticing that one of your vital steps has an error, and right after this you’re saying not to overcook, lol that’s a little tough to do unless we’re eyeballing it. It looks delicious, regardless.
Thanks for pointing that out, Matthew. The steak is cooked for 2-3 minutes or just until it begins to brown. I’ve updated the recipe to reflect the change and added the nutritional info. Enjoy! ๐
I purchased your 22 oz stwak and cheese stromboli and the meat had so much black pepper that, thats all i tasted couldn’t taste the garlic or onion powder, but it was extremely a flavor of black pepper,i was dissappointed because of the price i paid for it,ny uncle RECCOMENDed it to me because i love philly cheese steak
Gina Sheโs giving you the recipe. Make it how you like, and stop posting over and over again. WTH!
Lol nice… ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ
RIGHT!!! Seems like a troll to meโฆ
Very pleased with the results. I must have glazed over where it said to layer the cheese and steak mixture, but it made for a really cheesy layer by the crust๐ I pUt a teeny but of cajun seasoning in the Veggies, and just a bit of garlic salt on the stEak along with salt And pepper in bOth. It was a big hit in our housE. Sprinkled some mozerella over the top toward the end of baking ๐๐
has anyone done this with roast? If so how did you prepare the roast
I brushed some marinara/pizza sauce on top of mine after i took it out of the oven….mMMmmMMmm good #delicious
In the ingredients, it says that one pizza dough makes 2 strombolis yet in the instructions it has you using one dough for one stromboli… I’m confused, please advise!!!
Divide the dough in half before rolling or keep it whole and make a large stromboli!
Where to get dough from
My local grocery store usually has it by the deli counter.
Always make the recipe as written then review it! So good and so simple. Will definitely make again. Use homemade pizza dough to knock it out of the park!
yum, Glad you enjoyed the stromboli, Robyn! ๐
Not sure if it is because I didn’t have a rolling pin to roll out the dough or maybe the ingredients for too hot to put on the dough but I ended up with a wholy mess?
I had the same problem
Coming from South Philadelphia, we are big fans of the Philly Cheese Steak! This recipe is so delicious. My family loved it. I will look to follow you on Pinterest~
Thanks so much! I lived in South Philly for 2 years but had to relocate!
Prior resident of South Philly. Miss it sooooooo much
I was born and raised in Conshohocken, PA but moved to Maine 30+ years ago. When in Philly I would buy a bunch of Stromboli’s and freeze them and bring them home, no need to do that now as I can make my own with this wonderful recipe…. Thanks for sharing!!
I am unclear as what kind of meat to use. I haven’t been able to find anything suitable in my grocers store.
Any suggestions?
FLAP STEAK
I made this recipe today. It was over the top delicious! I am embarrassed to say my husband and I almost ate all of it! Looking forward to making it again. Thanks for the recipe.
I’m expecting baby no. 2 on Christmas and I’d love to add this recipe to my list of things to make and freeze so they’re ready once the little one comes. Any tips on how to do that?
I’ve got Stromboli on my menu for this week. However, this looks even better. I’m definitely giving this a try ๐ Pinning
What a beautiful stuffed bread! I would love a big piece…

Thanks Ella! I’m sure you would love it ๐
Help! I was trying to find a place to subscribe to your blog.
What a great idea! I like how this is tucked into a stromboli. So jealous you live in Philly. I went two years ago on vacation and completely fell in love with the city. We had such a good time there.
