Since trying the viral smashed potato trend, they have quickly become one of our favorite side dishes. They’re a hybrid of baked potatoes and crispy fries but so much better! They’re crispy golden on the outside and butter soft don’t the inside so you get the best of both worlds. They’re also so easy to make, too and I promise you’ll never want to go back to deep-frying! The result is deliciously ultra-crunchy and crispy potatoes with a fluffy interior that is out of this world. They are even better than French fries, you won’t be able to stop snacking on them!

What You Will Need

You need just a few simple ingredients to make these delicious crispy smashed potatoes. Here’s what you’ll need:

Potatoes: For smashed potatoes, Yukon potatoes or baby gold potatoes work best. Baby red potatoes are great too!

Butter + Oil: Melted butter gives the potatoes a rich buttery flavor and the oil helps give the edges a crispy crust.

Garlic + Parsley: Minced garlic is a major flavor booster and the parsley adds a pop of color!

How to Make Crispy Smashed Potatoes

  • Prep: Clean the potatoes and place the potatoes in a pot of salted water, covering about 1 inch above. Cook potatoes until soft, about 20 minutes.
  • Smash: Drain the potatoes then transfer to a large heavy-duty sheet pan. Gently smash the potatoes using a potato masher or the bottom of a cup.
  • Make the seasoning mix: In a small mixing bowl, combine the melted butter, oil,  garlic, and parsley. Brush the potatoes with the garlic butter mixture and generously sprinkle with salt & pepper. 
  • Bake: Bake in a 400F oven for 45 minutes or until golden and crispy. Be sure not to flip!

Crispy Smashed Potatoes

Ultra crispy Smashed Potatoes are perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside with the most delicious buttery garlic flavor! Serve these as a side dish or appetizer with your favorite dipping sauce.

Ingredients 

  • 1 pound Yukon or baby gold potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley
  • salt & pepper, to taste

Instructions 

  • Pre-heat oven to 400F.
    Clean the potatoes and place the potatoes in a pot of salted water, covering about 1 inch above. Cook potatoes until soft, about 20 minutes.
  • Drain the potatoes and allow to cool for 5 minutes. Transfer to a large sheet pan and gently smash the potatoes using a potato masher, or the bottom of a cup, until flattened to about 1/2 inch thick.
  • In a small mixing bowl, combine the melted butter, oil,  garlic, and parsley. Brush the potatoes with the garlic butter mixture. Generous sprinkle with salt & pepper.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes or until golden and crispy on the outside. Do not flip!

Notes

Storing leftovers: These smashed potatoes might not be quite as crispy as when they are freshly made, they will keep in the fridge for up to 5 days and 3 months in the freezer. Once completely cool, store them in a sealed, airtight container or bag.
To reheat: Bring refrigerated or frozen potatoes close to room temperature. Reheat at 425ºF in the oven or in the air fryer for about 5 minutes, or until they are the texture and temperature you want.
