Spicy pan grilled chicken and avocado tacos topped with a creamy cilantro lime sauce. These tasty tacos are bursting with flavor and are made in under 30 minutes!Chicken and Avocado Tacos with Creamy Cilantro SauceTake tacos to a whole new level with the addition of avocado and my favorite cilantro cream sauce. If you’ve had my popular shrimp tacos, then you’re going to love this chicken version. The chicken and avocado make a delicious pair and complement each other perfectly. The real star of the dish is this flavor-packed cilantro lime sauce. It’s creamy, zesty and makes a delicious addition to the chicken and avocado.

The chicken is seasoned with taco seasoning and garlic. You can use it right after seasoning it or marinate it in the fridge for up to 48 hours. Once you’re ready to cook the chicken, simply cook it on the stove-top in a few teaspoons of oil. And because the chicken is cut into small bite size pieces, it will absorb all the flavor and chicken will cook in under 15 minutes!

Instructions

To Make Chicken

  • Chop 2-3 medium chicken breasts into small bite-size pieces. In a medium bowl whisk together olive oil, garlic, chili, cumin, onion powder, and salt. Add in chicken and toss to coat completely. Cover and refrigerate for at least 10 minutes or up to 48 hours.
  • To cook: Heat a large heavy-duty or cast iron skillet on high heat for 1 minute. Add the olive oil and chicken. Cook chicken in a skillet over medium-high heat until charred and cooked through, 8-12 minutes. Turn off heat and finish with a squeeze of lime (optional).

To Make the Cilantro Lime Sauce

  • Add the sour cream, cilantro, garlic, lime juice and salt & pepper to blender or food processor. Blend for 30 seconds to 1 minutes or until creamy.

To Assemble:

  • Char tortillas on stove-top if desired. Add some of the chicken to the warmed tortillas. Top with avocado and cilantro sauce.

  1. Liked the seasoning and texture. Did not make the sauce and instead made guacamole. Not too spicy- just perfect!

  2. I made this last night except I used skirt steak and it was amazing!!!! I will definitely try this with chicken..real soon. I made cilantro lime rice with black beans as a side. I even put the sauce on the rice and beans…it was that good!

  3. Better than delicious. They tasted almost like fajitas. Best dinner we’ve had since Covid- 19 pandemic started!

  4. This was very good. Enjoyed the chicken, doubled the marinade as my pieces were not as coated as in the picture. The crema I just was not crazy about, unlike others who love it. It lacked flavor and was too thick. Prefer a creamy crema that can be drizzled on. This was more like flavored sour cream. Like others, wanted something crunchy added. Bought a bag of coleslaw, blended a dollop of the crema to coat. Also served with pico de gallo and Queso Fresco cheese. Will make again minus the crema.

    1. Love this recipe! Have made it several times already. Love the Crema but I love Cilantro and Lime!!
Comes together pretty quick for a yummy meal.Making it again tomorrow.

  5. I ❤️❤️❤️ this recipe! It is a great lighter version of the taco. My only dilemma… when my husband and I have this for dinner, we only have the tacos. What sides have others made to go with these yummy chicken tacos? I’m afraid of over powering the taste.

    1. I’ve made these so many times…love it! We usually make some black beans or refried beans as a side to go with it. Also, homemade guac and chips. You could add Mexican rice as a side too.

  6. My family loved this recipe. My husband told me he hopes we have this again soon. My family is not big on avocado, so I left this off. For toppings we also used fresh diced jalapeno and salsa.

  7. Made these tonight for my husband and fussy teenager. Absolutely delicious! Even the fussy one had seconds.x

  8. Absolutely love love love these tacos. Idid add a little shredded lettuce. Super easy and fast. Even my boyfriend said they were awesome And I thought he would turn his nose up. He’s a meat and potatoes man. Only disappointment was they were gone so FAST! Lol

  9. Hi! I’m a new blogger, and I’m currently writing up a blog post of all of my go-to recipes and this is a recipe I’ve been making for about a year now and absolutely LOVE. I use the sauce on everything! Would you be okay with me featuring this link in my blog? 🙂

  10. I made these last night and they were amazing!! I doubled the cumin because I love cumin. And for the chili powder, I used half regular aND half Chipotle chili powder. I used the juice of half a lime and marinated the chicken for 4 hours. Delicious! And the CILantro lime sour cream sauce was perfect!! Paired very well, along with the sliced avocado. I also used shredded iceberg lettuce for a little crunch. Thank you!

    1. I am and marinating the chicken in the fridge now and will be grilling the breasts and slicing them for the tacos. I also just made up the cilantro-lime sauce and it was delicious! Can’t wait to try it all together.

  11. Looking forward to cooking the tortillo recipe for the crowd over Christmas. it will encourage the children and have fun at the same time.

  12. This is so good. I’m not a huge cooker-of-chicken. We’re not big fans. but the flavors are so good in this dish. So glad we tried it! Well Done!

  13. I TRIED MAKING THE SAUCE WITH MAYO AND I THINK IT DEF NEEDS SOUR CREAM OR GREEK YOGURT FOR A BRIGHTER, FRESHER FLAVOR. wILL TRY AGAIN THAT WA AND ADD SOME JALAPENO FOR AN EXTRA KICK. (SORRY FOR ALL CAPS, FOR SOME REASON I CAN’T DO LOWERCASE ON THIS PAGE)

  14. These tacos are the best! The spices used with the chicken, the cilantro sauce, and the avocado all go together perfectly. I used low fat sour cream and wheat tortillas to cut a few calories out and it was delicious! I will make this 100000x again!

  15. I added jalepeno to the sauce. It was a bit bland but it kicked it up for me. I also used shredded chichen that i make and keep in the feezer. Once it thawed, i added the spices and let it sit a bit. Again, i like my spice so i added extra. Esp chili. I may add some cayanne next time. The avacado and suace made this very yummy. My 13 year old isnt a fan of avacado or cilantro but he was happy with the chicken, cheese, and salsa instead. Oh, i added red onion for cruch as a reviewer suggested. Im glad a did.

  16. These were great. i used leftover ROTISSERIE chicken and just seasoned. will add this to our regulars.

  29. This was super yummy. I had friends over for dinner and made this. It was a hit! Everyone loved it and wanted the recipe. I let the chicken marinate overnight which made the chicken very flavorful. The cilantro sauce was really [email protected]…. However I think next time I might add a jalapeño to the blender to add a little more heat.

  30. my these were delicious! I also added some red onion as a topping for some crunch. I was not disappointed and will be adding this recipe to my regular rotation. The only thing different I will do next time is double the recipe. Thank you!
