Peanut Butter Banana
If you like peanut butter and jelly you are going to love this toast topping idea. One of my favorite quick late-night snacks is this peanut butter and banana toast. I like to top it with a drizzle of honey and a pinch of cinnamon for an added kick.
- Peanut butter: For the healthiest option, use a natural peanut butter that only has peanuts and salt listed in the ingredients.
- Banana: Sliced banana is the most delicious pairing with peanut butter!
- Cinnamon: A pinch of cinnamon for extra delicious flavor!
Avocado Egg
I love avocado toast with eggs for a quick and healthy protein-packed breakfast. If you are looking to elevate your avocado egg game, check out how to make avocado toast with eggs in 4 different ways.
- Avocado: Mashed avocado on toast with an egg is a classic that never goes out of style!
- Egg: One fried egg on your avocado toast adds extra flavor and protein. Alternatively, you could add a scrambled egg, hard-boiled egg or poached egg. See cooking instructions for each type in this avocado toast with egg post.
- Sriracha: Optional, but so tasty if you like a bit of heat!
Tomato Pesto
This tomato pesto makes the perfect quick healthy vegetarian-friendly lunch or dinner. I sometimes like to add fresh sliced avocado and make it into a caprese sandwich.
- Pesto: So fresh and flavorful!
- Tomato: Sliced tomato over pesto is the perfect slightly sweet contrast to the savory pesto.
- Balsamic glaze: A drizzle of balsamic glaze is an irresistible finishing touch.
Cucumber Hummus
Hummus is one of the healthiest spreads you can find and makes a delicious addition to toast. You can top it with cucumber, any other veggie or boiled eggs.
- Hummus: Use any favorite flavor variety. For the freshest results, try my authentic creamy hummus, avocado hummus, or this delicious whipped feta dip.
- Cucumber: Thinly sliced cucumber adds a crisp, fresh crunch to the toast that pairs so well with the hummus.
- Everything bagel seasoning: Adds extra texture and some saltiness.
Strawberries & Cream
If you’re in the mood for something sweet and creamy then this avocado toast will hit all the right notes. The base begins with a cream spread. You can use Greek yogurt, mascarpone or cream cheese, or cottage cheese then top it with fresh sliced berries and a drizzle of honey.
- Greek yogurt: For a creamy, tangy base that will also add a bit of protein. As an alternative, try goat cheese or cottage cheese.
- Strawberries: Sliced or chopped strawberries are the perfect topping if you’re craving something sweet, yet nutritious.
- Honey: An added drizzle of honey sweetens the toast.
Almond Butter Apple
Almond butter is my new healthy obsession. It’s nuttiness is best paired with the crisp sweetness of apples. I like to add a drizzle of honey and a pinch of cinnamon for a delicious anytime snack.
- Almond butter: Just like with the peanut butter, it’s best to choose an almond butter that only has almonds and maybe salt in the ingredient list.
- Apple: Sliced apple is a match made in heaven with almond butter. You could even add a pinch of cinnamon for cinnamon apple flavor.
- Honey: Make this deliciously sweet with a drizzle honey over the top.
Variations and substitutions
- Fruit: For any of the topping ideas involving fruit, feel free to change it up and add whatever fruit that you have on hand or feel like eating. Blueberries, raspberries, sliced peaches or sliced pears are all great options.
- Sunflower seed butter: If you or someone you’re serving has a nut allergy, sunflower seed butter is a great alternative to peanut butter or almond butter.
- Add nuts or seeds: For a little added crunch and healthy fats, add a sprinkle of your favorite nuts or seeds over the top of any of these toasts.
How to Make Toast with Toppings
Use your favorite method of toasting bread – stovetop method, toaster, toaster oven, oven or air fryer to toast your bread. Once you’ve achieved your desired level of golden brown crispiness on the outside, add the spread you’d like and your toppings of choice.
Helpful Tips
- Use a thick slice of bread: To ensure the toast holds up well to all of the toppings, it’s best to choose a thick-cut, sturdy piece of bread.
- Watch the toast closely: Especially, if you’re using the stovetop method or a toaster oven, it’s important to watch the toast closely so it doesn’t burn. If you’re using a toaster, check the setting each time to make sure it’s set correctly. No one wants burnt toast!
- Flip your pieces: When you make toast in a toaster, both sides are heated simultaneously. Don’t forget if you make toast in the oven or on a skillet, you’ll need to flip your slice halfway for the best results!

Frequently asked questions
What bread is best for toast?
You can truly use any size or type of bread for toasting! Use whatever you like best! Personally, I like to use a sturdy, thick-cut piece of bread like sourdough or a thick slice of whole wheat bread. These options will hold up best to the added toppings without getting weighed down or becoming soggy.
What are some good toppings for toast?
The options are endless for spreads and other toppings to add to toast. To ensure your toasted bread is on the healthy side, I like to add either fruit with a spread like nut butter or Greek yogurt. Or, for a savory option, hummus or mashed avocado with added veggies and/or egg is a great choice.
What is the best way to toast bread?
There are several ways to make a good piece of toast! Using a pan on the stovetop takes an extra minute and may require a bit more attention, but the toasted bread turns out perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft in the center. Heat a greased skillet to medium-high. Once hot, add your bread to the skillet, then let it cook for one minute. When it is browned to your preference, flip it and cook the other side to desired crispiness.
Yum! All delicious ideas, I tried a few and will try the rest!
