Ingredients you’ll need

The ingredient list might look a little long for this chicken caesar sandwich recipe but everything needed is simple and things you probably already have in your kitchen.

  • Chicken: We’re using 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts cut in half lengthwise. You can also use boneless, skinless chicken thighs, if you prefer.
  • Egg + milk: Helps the seasonings and bread crumbs adhere to the chicken and creates a crispy exterior when fried.
  • Seasonings: A mix of garlic powder, salt and pepper gives the chicken flavor.
  • Breadcrumbs + Panko: For an extra crispy crust!
  • Garlic butter: The garlic butter is a mix of salted butter, mayo, minced garlic, fresh parsley and grated parmesan.
  • Caesar dressing: After one taste of my homemade caesar dressing, you’ll never want store-bought again!
  • For assembly: To put the sandwiches together, you’ll need hoagies or a baguette and romaine lettuce to toss with the dressing.

How to make this recipe

Don’t be intimidated to fry the chicken! It’s actually so easy to do and SO worth it! Here are simple step-by-step instructions:

Make the chicken cutlets. On a cutting board or flat surface, slice the chicken cutlets in half or third horizontally to make 4-6 thin cutlets. In a small bowl whisk an egg with a splash of milk, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. In another bowl, combine the breadcrumbs. Bread your chicken by dipping it into the eggs then breadcrumbs, and fry in a shallow pan in 1-inch deep oil over medium-high heat until golden brown and crispy then set aside on a towel-lined pan.

Make Garlic Butter Bread: Combine all the ingredients for the garlic butter in a small bowl. Split your bread in half lengthwise, Spread the garlic butter on each half from inside. Place in a 450ºF oven or under a broiler to toast for about 3-4 minutes or until the edges begin to turn gold. Be sure to keep an eye on it so they don’t burn!

Make Dressing: Whisk all the ingredients for the dressing in a bowl or mason jar. In a large salad bowl, toss 3-4 tablespoons of the dressing with the chopped romaine.

Assemble: When ready to serve, build the sandwich by layering chicken cutlets, salad, and extra grating of parmesan cheese on the bread. Enjoy immediately and thank me later! Also, If you enjoyed this sandwich, check out my full line of sandwiches for more delicious drool-worthy sandwich recipes!

Recipe Tips

Fry right away: After breading the chicken, cook it immediately. Letting it sit can make the coating soggy and less crispy.

Check the oil temperature: For perfectly fried chicken, maintain the oil at 350ºF. Use an instant-read thermometer or a frying thermometer to ensure accuracy.

Add chicken safely: Gently slide the chicken into the hot oil to avoid splattering, which can cause burns.

Serve warm: Assemble and enjoy the sandwich immediately after cooking for the best texture and flavor.

Serving suggestions

Frequently asked questions

Can I use store-bought Caesar dressing?

Yes, store-bought dressing works well if you’re short on time, but my homemade dressing adds a fresh and authentic flavor. I really recommend it, if you have the time!

Can I bake the chicken instead of frying it?

Absolutely! Bake breaded chicken at 400ºF for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and cooked through.

Can I make this chicken Caesar sandwich ahead of time?

It’s best enjoyed fresh, but you can prepare the components ahead. You could definitely make the dressing in advance. You could also fry the chicken ahead of time, although it will lose some of its crispiness. Keep the chicken, dressing and greens separate and assemble right before serving.
