Growing up, we would always go to the bakery and order pastries, cinnamon rolls, and donuts for special occasions. Because we didn’t go often, I always wanted to get the biggest and most delicious cinnamon roll.

Now that I am an adult, I still have a love and desire for freshly baked cinnamon rolls. However, I wanted to try a fun and healthier twist by making them keto. If you eat low carb or are just wanting to cut back on refined sugars, these keto cinnamon rolls are what you have been looking for. They are positively delightful and the perfect way to start the day. Only, when you eat these cinnamon rolls, you don’t have to have a bunch of guilt!

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE 30 MINUTE KETO CINNAMON ROLLS

For the Dough:

  • Carbquik – In case you haven’t heard of Carbquik before, it’s a wonderful baking mix that is similar to Bisquick only without all the carbs! It’s a must when you are cooking low carb and will make your life so much easier!
  • Water – When combined with the carb quick you will end up with a delightful dough that produces fluffy cinnamon rolls.

For the Filling:

  • Butter – You will need to set out the butter ahead of time so it can soften for the best results. Or zap it in the microwave for 20-30 seconds. Just don’t let it melt and allow it to sit at room temperature before using it.
  • Brown Swerve – You will get a delicious sweetness when you use brown swerve. It replicates brown sugar perfectly and will become your new favorite brown sugar substitute.
  • Cinnamon – The star is the cinnamon, of course. It’s that perfect flavor that every good cinnamon roll needs.

Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • Cream Cheese – You only need half of a block of cream cheese. Again, you will need to let it sit out to be room temperature before using it.
  • Butter – The butter adds a wonderful flavor to the icing.
  • Powdered Erythritol – Instead of regular refined powdered sugar, use powdered swerve instead. It’s the best keto powdered sugar I’ve tried. It isn’t grainy and it’s so yummy and with no after taste.
  • Vanilla Extract – The cinnamon rolls need just a touch of vanilla. One teaspoon is just the perfect amount.

How To Make Keto Cinnamon Rolls

It’s hard to believe you can make homemade cinnamon rolls in just 30 minutes. Don’t lose this recipe, because you are going to want to make them again!

Start off by mixing together the water and carb quick in a bowl. Use a wooden spatula to combine until a dough ball forms.

Then place the dough onto a surface that is clean and has been dusted with carb quick. Knead the dough for 2-3 minutes.

Allow the dough to rest for 5 minutes, then roll it out into a large rectangle. Spread the butter, brown swerve, and cinnamon on the dough. Roll it up lengthwise and cut into 9 cinnamon rolls. Place the rolls inside of a baking dish.

Cook the cinnamon rolls at 375 degrees for 25 minutes. Then take them out of the oven and let them cool for five minutes.

Prepare the icing by whisking the cream cheese, butter, swerve, and vanilla together. Once smooth and free of lumps, drizzle on top of the cinnamon rolls. Enjoy!

Cinnamon Roll Variations

We love everything about these cinnamon rolls just the way it’s written. But if you want to add in some extra pizzazz that’s more than fine! Here are a few ideas that might work well for you.

  • Chocolate: use your favorite sugar-free chocolate and melt it. Then drizzle it on the cinnamon rolls in place of the icing. Or chop up pieces of chocolate and add it to the cinnamon roll rectangle before you roll it up.
  • Nuts: Add pecans or walnuts to the cinnamon rolls before rolling them into a log. It’s a great way to add some crunch.
  • Orange Juice: Add 1 tablespoon of fresh-squeezed orange juice to the icing. It’s a lovely way to make them gourmet style!

Instructions 

  • In a large bowl using a wooden spoon spatula, combine carb quick and water until a firm dough forms. Pour dough mixture onto a clean surface floured with a few teaspoons of carb quick and knead for 2-3 minutes.
  • Rest the dough for 5 minutes. Roll out into a rectangle, spread butter over dough, sprinkle with brown swerve and top with cinnamon. Roll up dough lengthwise and cut into 9 equal pieces. transfer to an 8×8 or 9×9 baking dish.
  • Bake at 375F preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove from oven and cool at least 5 minutes before frosting.
  • To make cream cheese frosting: Whisk all the ingredients in a small bowl until lump-free.

  5. Not sure on your nutritional calculations. Carbquick is 110 calories per 1/3 cup. By that alone, you haven’t factored in the cost of the filling or the icing. I don’t believe that the recipe yields at 116 cals per serving. It is a bit misleading for folks.

    1. These are delicious, but I agree. I get 262 per roll if I do not include calories for the sweeteners.

  8. Is there a substitute that can be used for the Carbquick? What about BirchBenders pancake and waffle mix?

    1. This is a Keto product (found at Costco), at 5g net carbs at 35 grams of mix.

      1. Delicious. Iโ€™ve baked a lot of low carb and keto recipes but this felt and tasted similar to a regular cinnamon roll. I did add a small amount of sweetener to the carbquick to help disguise the carbquick taste.

        1. There is enough sweetener in the recipe to cover any taste of the carbquick. Why would you need more unless to are eating the carbquick by itself. A great keto replacement for cinnamon rolls. If you like the orange rolls just add a teaspoon orange extract to the cinnamon filling.

          1. Wow Kevin. If Dana wants to add more sweetner, then Dana can add more sweetner.

          2. To be honest, I can taste the difference when I use Carbquick so I would probably add sweetener to mask the somewhat odd taste. But I liked to suggestion of using orange extract since I love orange rolls. I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve ever seen orange extract, but Iโ€™m sure Amazon has it. Raspberry would be really good too!   10. I used a timer when kneading, rolled my dough out very thin (that way the good stuff offsets the biscuit-y texture), and used a little less butter (it was still pretty saturated). I also used some monk fruit powder in the icing. I baked them in my muffin tin to make it easier to freeze them. They turned out fantastic!

    1. I canโ€™t take that after taste from monk fruit sweetener. I tossed the bag in the trash. I use Purecane. The best sweetener I have used by far!

  13. Iโ€™ve made these twice now….each time my icing has almost a โ€œbitterโ€ taste. I thought maybe it was my vanilla, so this time I used a different brand, same thing happened?

    1. My guess is too much sweetener. When I make the cream cheese icing I use a whole block of cream cheese, 1/4 cup butter, 2/3 cup of sweetener (Swerve powdered), 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1/2 cup heavy cream. Beat with a mixer until fluffy.

    could be!! I added a little more of each of the filling items and the rolls had good flavor. My only complaint is not regarding the recipe, but regarding the icing. The Swerve confectioners sugar leaves a little bit of an aftertaste. Thank you for the recipe ๐Ÿ˜Š

      1. These are wonderful! The only thing I changed out of the entire recipe was to only add 1/2 cup powdered monkfruit to the frosting then added a tbsp of Jordan’s Skinny Syrup (cinnamon vanilla flavor) and a bit of unsweetened almond milk to thin it out. It ended up making about twice the amount of frosting needed. Also, like others have said, 116 calories is not what I got when I added the ingredients to myfitnesspal. I got 12 biggish rolls and they came out to 198 cals per serving but in reality it was probably a bit less duetonow using all of the icing. These area must make!!!!! I will also say don’t overeat that much artificial sweetener as your tummy will hate you the rest of the day lol

  15. Does adding baking powder help the cinnamon rolls rise? & will xanthan gum help the dough stay together?

    1. The cinnamon rolls rise very well on their own but it wouldn’t hurt to add another 1/4tsp if desired. I highly suggest trying the recipe as is without making any adjustments to see how good it is!!

  16. I used just about a quarter cup of swerve and a tsp of lemon juice in the frosting. 1 cup would have been way too much for our tastes. I’m glad to have a working frosting recipe!

  17. We enjoyed making these. It’s hard to believe these are low carb because they are so good. The dough was a bit bland. Has anyone added powdered swerve etc to the dough to give it some sweetness?

    1. I also thought the dough was more like biscuits than rolls. Maybe a little extra water and some sweetener and cinnamon in the dough would help…

      1. I made these and added 1/2 cup sweetener, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 1 teaspoon vanilla to the dough. They turned out great!

  19. Carbquick ingredients are not so keto friendly…just beware.

    Ingredients Carbaloseโ„ข flour (enzyme enriched wheat, vital wheat gluten, wheat fiber, high-protein patent wheat flour, soy fiber, canola oil, salt, emulsifiers, enzymes, ascorbic acid, calcium propionate), palm and palm-kernel oil, buttermilk powder, baking powder, egg white powder, lecithin, salt, natural flavors.

    1. The majority of carbs are cut out when they make carbalose flour, leaving behind mostly fiber, which is not unhealthy and not processed as carbs (aka, straight to sugar) in your body. That’s why carbalose flour is keto-friendly.

    2. I have wondered about this…when I use carbquik I briefly get the same the same shaky sugar rush feeling I would get with a real pastry or pancake but when I checked my blood sugar it was 100 not 180+ as I would get with a real pastry. It could also be the sweeteners or fake syrup giving the shaky feeling. Odd but at least seems to legitimately prevent a blood sugar spike in people with insulin resistance.. feeling passes quickly but always a bit disconcerting!

    3. For those who say Carbquick isn’t keto friendly because it has gluten, you are wrong. Keto is all about reducing carbs. If it fits your macro and doesn’t spike your blood sugar knocking you out of ketosis, it’s keto friendly. Keto is about putting your body into a state of ketosis. It just so happens that regular flour is high is carbs. Don’t worry about the gluten unless you have a gluten sensitivity

    1. Agreed! They can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container or covered with plastic wrap for foil for up to a week.

  24. Just made them- the dough was really hard to roll out and the cinnamon rolls arenโ€™t that soft. Would make again but maybe add more water. I also omitted the butter from the icing to cut down on the calories- I came out with 226 each when I plugged it into My Fitness Pal.

    1. I used upwards of 2.5 CUPS of water for this recipe…. am I missing something?…. it says 1 Cup In the recipe…..

  27. Just made these and they are amazing. I do have a question as to how you got to your calorie count per serving. If you add up calories for the Carbquick, butter and cream cheese, it comes out to 168 calories if you use 1/2 of a 4oz block of cream cheese, or 191 calories if you use 1/2 of an 8oz block. Am I missing something? Again, they are so good and many thanks for posting the recipe.

    1. How many servings did you calculate? This recipe makes 9 rolls and the calculation is per roll.

    2. I’m assuming its an 1/4 of an 8 oz block of cream cheese for the frosting. There is larger ones.

    1. I see that it is in the ingredients but if you read the bio it isnโ€™t mentioned. I let it out of the dough. Also used a whole package of cream cheese instead of 1/2. It seemed like a 1/2 package was to grainy with the powered sugar.

      1. Unfortunately, Sucralose is included in the ingredients of the Carbquick. I wish companies would stop using these artificial sweeteners. In my opinion they taste awful, and they have been proven to be awful for you. I would have loved to try this recipe but for the sucralose in Carquick.
