It’s finally here! We are a huge fan of banana bread.  Somehow, we always end up with 3 to 4 very ripe bananas just sitting on the counter. Bananas that are too ripe to eat, but are perfect for baking. You know what they say, when life gives you ripe bananas, make banana bread.

But seriously, ripe bananas are a dream in banana bread and make the best banana bread ever. This healthy banana bread is everything you want in banana bread. It’s moist, dense, and full of flavor. I made a batch and shared a few slices with my friends and they could not believe it was “healthy”.

This recipe is a keeper for sure, and I’m sure your family will love it as much as we do! 

HOW TO MAKE BANANA BREAD HEALTHY

To make this banana bread healthy:

The sugar is replaced with honey

for the butter, we opted for coconut oil

As for the flour, whole wheat flour works wonders!

Another very important ingredient is the ripe bananas. Ripe bananas are super sweet so the riper the better. If your bananas are not yet brown or soft then you can place them in a 300F degree oven for 20 minutes or until dark brown. I swear this method will produce the ripest bananas that are perfect for banana bread.

HOW TO STORE BANANA BREAD

This banana bread will last at room temperature for 3-4 days. To store, place a paper towel in an airtight container or ziplock bag and top your bread with another paper towel. Be sure to seal the bag or airtight container.

To Freeze: You can leave the loaf whole and just wrap it and store it in a freezer-safe bag or container until you’re ready to eat it. You can also slice it and freeze it as well. To unthaw, just move it to the fridge for a short time or take it out of the freezer and set it out on the counter. It will unthaw quickly and easily.

Ingredients 

Instructions 

  • Pre-heat oven to 325F. Grease a 9×5 inch loaf pan and set aside.

  • In a medium bowl, whisk the flour, cinnamon, baking soda and salt. Set aside.

  • In a large bowl, beat eggs, oil, honey, milk and vanilla for 2 minutes. Stir in the bananas, flour mixture and chocolate chips (or any other add ins of choice.

  • Pour batter into greased pan, sprinkle with some more cinnamon, raw sugar, or banana slices (optional) Bake for 50-55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes, slice and enjoy!

Notes

To make this bread gluten free: Use Bob’s Red Mill gluten free flour.
For dairy-free/vegan: use almond milk and flax eggs and maple syrup.
*Trader Joe’s has white whole wheat flour that is also great in this bread.

    Just a note about the baking time. I had to Keep it in the oveN for an extra 20 min before toothpick came out clean.

  2. Just made this as i often crave sweet treats iN the evening and it is so good! I used spelt flour & aBout 3/4 of the wet mix as i felt the batter would be Too runny & it turned out amazing! Once cooled Gave My First slice a quick blast in the microwave & the choc chips turned all gooey yummmmm!

  5. I don’t typically leave comments but this recipe is amazing! Turned out fantastic, all “healthy” breads usually turn out mushy and less than ideal- this is absolutely fantastic! i added walnuts and pecans instead of chocolate chips.

  6. I usually don’t comment On recipes, however I HAVE MY SECOND LOAF IN THE OVEN AS I TYPE:) [MADE THE FIRST A FEW WEEK AGO]. IT’S SO FRICKING MOIST AND DELICIOUS. I used olive oil, and sprinkled brown sugar on the top right before putting it into the oven. My Boyfriend and i love unhealthy sweets and hate “healthier” alternatives… but by god this is 10 times better than any banana bread i ever tried!!!! We ate The Whole loaf in Two day! The only thing i did differently was use 3 tsps of baking powder instead of soda because that’s all i had.

  7. Not thAt healthy if you add all of the required honey and olive oil for example. As well too much Wheat required.

    1. This bread is a healthy ALTERNATIVE to regular banana bread. It’s not for everyone but if you are cutting down on processed sugars and white wheat then this is a great option.

  8. By far the best banana bread I have MAde in the last 40 years. Love that there is no processed sugar or butter. Also,great with whole wheat flour. . I sweeten with Lily’s dark chocolate chips made with with STEVIA All the family loves it including grandchildren.

  9. i make this all the time With either mashed Banana or pureed pumpkin and theyre both fabulous. I like to add dark chOcolate chunks anD sprinkle with walnuts so they get nice and toasted on top. Great recipe!

  21. Just made this as a treat for my daughter’s lunchbox – wow! I think iTs my favourite banana bread recipe so far. I had half an orange to use up, so i Squeezed that in, and also added soMe dessicated coconut and a seed mix of chia/Hemp/linseed. I don’t thinks it’s going to last long! 😊
